Sustainable Expansion for a Leading British Manufacturer

Neil Taylor Contractors were appointed as Principal Contractor for a major expansion project at Senator International’s Huncoat Industrial Estate site in Accrington.

With a brief that balanced scale, sustainability, and operational efficiency, the project involved the delivery of an 80,000 square foot extension - including a new warehouse, recycling facilities, workshops, and a staff canteen.

Senator International is one of the UK’s leading office furniture manufacturers, known not only for the scale of their operations but also for their long-standing commitment to sustainable practices. Their "Sustain" initiative focuses on reducing environmental impact at every stage of a product’s life, from design to end-of-life recycling or remanufacture. To support this, Neil Taylor Contractors constructed bespoke recycling facilities on site, allowing Senator to process materials more efficiently and reduce waste directly at the point of production.

Alongside the new buildings, the project also saw significant improvements to the site’s infrastructure. Access from Whinney Hill Road and Newhouse Road was upgraded to better accommodate commercial vehicle traffic, supporting day-to-day logistics and improving safety for staff and deliveries. The external works were completed with full landscaping - softening the industrial footprint, enhancing the overall appearance of the site, and supporting surface water drainage.

A new canteen and welfare space was also built as part of the development. With energy-efficient lighting and flexible layouts, the facility provides a comfortable and well-designed area for staff to take breaks and recharge - underlining Senator’s commitment to the wellbeing of their workforce.

The project was delivered on time in April 2017, and has since enabled Senator International to increase its production capacity, improve on-site material handling, and enhance the overall flow of operations across the estate. By combining practical design with efficient construction, Neil Taylor Contractors helped to create a facility that reflects both the day-to-day needs of a busy manufacturing environment and the longer-term ambitions of a forward-thinking British brand.
